Deran had sat down in a comfortable corner, slightly hidden from the passerbys. He leaned back, his hood slightly unshrouding his handsome face. He closed his eyes, not wanting to get drawn in by observing society quite yet. A small bird landed next to him, he could smell its sweet scent. Deran smiled, thinking that his little sister Nira had joined him, in some twisted way to pass by the day. Deran wished he had carried some bread or crumbs in his pocket to feed the bird with, but for now he remained still, not wanting to scare the bird away.

Ava wandered the streets of Hogsmeade. Her purse was nearly empty of money. She had bought more quills, ink, parchment, and some books of interest. After stopping to tie her shoe on the side of the street she felt a presence. It was a strange feeling inside of her stomach. Ava glanced around quickly, but couldn't see anyone. 'It's just my imagination,' she thought wearily. 'Maybe I should have invited a friend to come with me today,' Ava had been trying to conquer her fear of being alone, but it was very difficult.
It was a little after lunch time and Ava didn't really want to head back to the castle just yet. She sat down on a bench outside a shop and took out one of her new books. The feeling in her stomach was still there though, as she turned to chapter one.

Deran had watched the girl walk around and sit down, opening the book. He could sense that her pulse was beating faster than what the usual rate of blood pressure was for most people, and he wondered why. The bird had made its way over to the bench and had begun to pick at the legs of the bench, making its way over to the girls shoes. Deran crouched down, motioning for the bird to come back, but it insisted on remaining there, picking at the girls feet.

Ava was engrossed in the book she was reading and it took her a minute to realize a little bird was by her feet.
"Are you hungry little guy?" she asked the bird. Most people would find this strange, but Ava loved animals and believed they could understand some of what humans said to them. She pulled out her Honeyduke's bag that had half a pastry in it. The delicious treat was still warm as she slowly broke a few pieces off and threw them on the ground.
A smile emerged on her face as she observed the bird. The feeling in her stomach had lessened somewhat, but it still felt like a presence was watching her. She glanced around again and thought she saw someone over in the shadows. Ava shook her head, 'My imagination is getting the better of me again,' she thought.

Deran watched as the girl interacted with the bird. He noticed how the bird stayed even after being fed, its head cocked, as if it was staring right at him. Deran grumbled, getting up, not really wanting to interact with the girl, but he had the feeling it was what Nira wanted him to do.
He stepped around the bench, seeing how he noticed the girl being uncomfortable as if she detected his prescence. He walked over to the front of the bench, a couple feet away. He crouched down holding out his hand, in which the bird excitedly walked up into. Deran looked up at the girl, a small smile on his scarred yet beautiful face. "Thank you for feeding her, she's been hungry for quite awhile. I didn't have anything on me that she would have liked so, thank you. I'm also sorry for having made you feel uneasy, I was sitting back there," Deran pointed to the shadows, "with her when you came along and sat down."

Ava was slightly shocked to see the man come out of the shadows she had been eying just a few minutes ago. He looked a bit wary, like he hadn't planned on being found. She listened to his thanks and apology.
"You're welcome, the pastry probably would've ended up in the trash later, so I'm glad I got to help an animal in need," she attempted to smile, but it looked more scared then anything. Ava was surprised with herself that she didn't ramble more, like she would usually do if it was another student. 'There's something different about him..' she mused. "I'm Ava by the way," her smile returned almost back to normal when she said that.

Deran noticed the change in her attitude, but put it in the back of his mind. "Nice to meet you Ava. I'm Deran." He awkwardly put out his hand, not knowing if she was comfortable with shaking it or not.
"Do you go to Hogwarts?" Deran asked Ava, trying to make the conversation less awkward and uptight. From her purchases and her age he only guessed that she went there, but he had no idea what else to say, seeing how he hadn't talked to someone who didn't want to kill him in a very long time.

Ava shook Deran's hand, mentally kicking herself for not offering hers in the first place.
"Yeah, I do. I'm a fifth year in Ravenclaw," she responded to his question. It would seem pretty obvious, what with the supplies and the Hogwarts' emblem on her backpack. The conversation was a little awkward so Ava looked around for a change in subject. She noticed that Deran was still standing. "Would you like to sit down?" she offered moving her bags onto the ground. When she went to move the bag containing the ink her hand slipped and it smashed to the ground. The ink spilled all over the new parchment and some oozed onto her sneakers.
"Aw crap," Ava muttered quickly saving the quills and her backpack from the ink spill.

Deran had begun to walk over to her to sit down, when the ink fell and spilt all over. "It's all right. Do you want me to clean it up?" Deran asked as he held out his wand and a rag, giving her an option on how she wanted it done. He was slighly relieved that she hadn't cut herself with the glass, seeing how he had grown a little hungier, and it would be all to obvious if he had taken out one of the pills. Though Deran knew in his heart he would rather starve to death than to drink human blood.

Ava blushed and said, "It's alright I think I can handle it." Ava had been an independent person almost her whole life, she didn't like having others do things for her. The Ravenclaw thought for a minute then took out her wand and muttered Reparo the ink bottles repaired themselves. Just her ink splattered shoes and parchment remained. She dug around in her bag for a minute then withdrew a pair of flip-flops. "I'm always prepared," she told Deran smiling again. After her sneakers were off she picked up the ruin parchment and threw it in a nearby garbage bin.
On her way back from the bin, she noticed that her father's knife had fallen out of her bag. "Oh, it's a good thing I didn't lose this," she thought aloud after she picked up the prized possession. Ava sat back down on the bench. "Sorry about all that, my older brother says I'm smart, but not coordinated."

Deran watched her clean up the mess, as he put his wand and rag away. He noticed the knife fall out of the bag, and arched his eyebrow. "Interesting that you should carry a knife around, even though your brother says you aren't coordinated. Though from the way you reacted to not losing it, I'm guessing that it has more importance than just being a knife." Deran was almost about to add instead of saying knife, a weapon, seeing how he kept several daggers on himself as well, though mainly for self-defense and killing reasons.

Ava thought for a minute before answering. Her father's death was still a touchy subject that usually ended with her crying, so she didn't want to go into detail with that. Instead she played with the knife before launching into a very short version of the story.
"Well the day after I got my Hogwarts' letter my father was killed. This knife use to be his and when I have it with me I feel like nothing can harm me. I would never use it unless I had to because I really am not coordinated at all." Ava felt relieved after saying that. The only other people she talked about her Dad's death to was her mother and brother. It was like her though, trusting a complete stranger to hear her worse memory and see her in her most vulnerable state. Tears began to collect under her eyelashes. Ava quickly brushed then away before they could spill over.

Deran nodded, as he sat down next to her. "I'm very sorry that he was killed. If you don't mind me asking, was he murdered? I'm sorry that I brought it up but your knife is very much like this bird, a picture and a piece of cloth I carry with me, and my bracelet." Deran pushed back the sleeve of his cloak revealing a thick silver bracelet around his right wrist.
"I know sorry's usually just don't cut it, but I can tell you truthfully that I know what you are going through, and I won't take advantage of that." Deran added trying to state that he understood but like others he knew, he wasn't going to jump at the chance to persuade Ava to do anything or change her views, to avenge her fathers death, something he had made the mistake of doing seeing how it didn't really help.

Ava had been expecting the usually reaction people gave, the 'sorries' and sympathetic faces. She was shocked to here that Deran had the same loss as her, maybe not completely the same, but similar. The bracelet he showed her was beautiful and she fought the urge to touch it.
"Thank you," she replied before she answered his other question. After she took a deep breath Ava said, "Yes, he was murdered on his way home from work. We still don't know who killed him. I haven't tried to avenge his death, I don't think that's what he would've wanted, but my brother is going to investigate next year when he's out of Hogwarts. Andrew was effected a lot more then me by our Dad's death." Her emotions were better under control now and her eyes were staying dry.

"I'm glad you aren't avenging his death, it would have been nice for someone to tell me that. My family and friends were murdered as well...by my Uncle." Deran looked at Ava, wondering if she thought him horrid for killing his Uncle even though he only hinted at it.
At the mention of her brother going to investigate when he was done with school he replied with a small smile, "I see, I hope that whatever happens everything ends well and that you are at peace with what you discover." Deran looked at Ava, wondering what he should say next.
