Ava sighed and rolled over so she was on her stomach. She propped herself up with her elbows while the rain steadily fell. She was completely soaked; her wet hair felt heavy as it hung limply.
Ava smiled at Deran when he told her she was a rain spirit. "Everyone says I should have been born a mermaid because I love water so much."
It was silent for a moment. Ava realized they had been talking about her almost the entire time. She was curious about Deran, but didn't want to seem like she was prying for information.
The soft sound of the rain gave her the courage to ask Deran about his sister. "So your sister, what was she like?"

Deran leaned forward at the mention of Nira. A sad smile was across his lips. "Nira, was sixteen when she was murdered, but it seemed like she had already lived her life." Deran said at first smiling knowing that Nira actually was three hundred and eighty nine years old when she died.
"Nira was one of those people who never grew up. She didn't whine or complain and she found the positive in everything. I was older than her, but I feel like she taught me more than I taught her. When she was alive, she made me feel alive. She would run around jumping for joy at the simpliest of things. She would try to chase the sunset, and gather a up a rainbow. Her favorite thing to do was climb trees and pretend she was a bird. I used to put her on my shoulders and we would run around so she could feel like she was flying." Deran smiled as he stroked the little bird.
"She was the happiest girl alive, and she never held a grudge even when my Uncle killed my parents she told him she forgave him, but it was the first time I had seen her cry and be scared, and I never forgave him for doing that to her. The Kieler house was her castle, and I was her best friend. We were the youngest in the clan, and a lot of the neighboring kids didn't come near us...I guess they were afraid. She loved to play dolls and dress up, she was a true child at heart. A pure, innocent child....that is what my father always used to say. My family were the world to me, we shared so many experiences together and we all loved the little things like watching a flower bloom or a thunderstorm.....we were very happy." Deran looked down at his hands, knowing that he hadn't even scratched the surface on what Nira was like, and even his family. After living for so long the memories had become ingrained in him, and he felt as if they had been all alive yesterday.

Ava listened in awe as Deran described his sister. He looked lost in his memories. She waited a minute before responding, and let his words be absorbed.
"She sounds like someone everyone liked," Ava said truthfully. In fact, she thought that Nira and herself would get along if she had met her.
"I wish that my family could've done those things together. We never will," Ava paused then said, "It seems like you all got along really well." The rain wasn't falling as heavy as before and it looked like the sun was going to break through the clouds soon.

Deran looked at Ava. Nira was someone everyone would have like...that is if she had been a human instead. He nodded at her remarks, "even though you didn't get to share every single happy moment with your family, you still have your memories. You also have people who support you and helped you through your father's death. I didn't have that, I only had people searching for me so they could kill off the last member of the Kieler clan. I had never experienced death before that day...true I knew things died, I just never thought it would happen to my family...so soon. I had no one to help me grieve...I didn't even know what grief and saddness was. So be thankfull, that even though it may not appear that you are a whole family, on the inside you father still lives on and that is what makes your family whole, and able to live on." Deran smiled, as if showing he was finally getting over his familes loss. Caleigh and this conversation with Ava was helping him with that...he only wished that they had come sonner, but he couldn't change the past.

Ava nodded solemnly. It was true that she had her mother, brother, and friends to help her through the earlier grieving process. Now she barely mentioned her dad and lend everyone to believe that she was over his death.
"I don't know what I would've done without my family and friends to help after his death." Ava said. Deran's wisdom was strong and he seemed to have more experience then the average...however old he was. She assumed he was in his early twenties or somewhere around that age.
Ava thought she was mature for her age because of her father's death, but that was just one family member. If she had lost both her parents and her brother how would she act now?

Deran nodded, "It's always nice to have those people around who care about you, even if you don't show them half the time what you're real feelings are. I have found that a lot of people hide their true emotions fairly well, you can never understand a person completly because you are not that person. Most people don't even have a full understanding of themself or why they exist even when they die."
Deran had been holding the bird, trying to keep it warm which was hard seeing how he was naturally cold. He opened his hands and the bird flew up into the tree as it hopped from branch to branch.

Ava looked up at the little bird who was jumping from branch to branch.
"That's true, some people just float through life, looking for a purpose to live and trying to figure things out. They hide their emotions from others and pretend like nothings wrong and are never truly happy." As she said that Ava felt like she was describing her life, something that wasn't too comforting.
The rain had stopped now, but it was still rather cloudy out. Patches of sunlight were breaking through, and one was directly shining on Ava, like a spotlight. She closed her eyes for a second before standing up.
"I should probably go and get some dry clothes," Ava pointed out smiling. Her brother's jacket clung to her shirt and her jeans were soaked.

Deran got up as well, "I would escort you back, but I have to go back to my house and take care of a couple of things." Deran said quickly. The truth was, was he didn't know if the headmaster and a couple of people would take kindly his visit to Hogwarts, seeing how he was different from the rest of them.
"It was nice meeting you Ava, I'm sure we will see each other again." Deran smiled as he motioned for the little bird to come down. The bird flew down and sat on his shoulder again. It gave a little tweet and spread it's wings in Ava's direction as if she were agreeing to Deran's statement.

"It was nice meeting you too, Deran," Ava said smiling. "We well definitely need to hang out again soon." She picked up her things from under the tree and started to walk back up to the castle, but then she remembered that she had to pick up more ink and parchment again. "Wrong way," she said aloud turning around, "See you," Ava turned and waved before heading up and into the shop.
